Synagogue Move
November 2, 2003
![]() From 11 PM to 6 AM on a cold November night, the over-100-year old Ahavath Beth Israel synagogue (the only synagogue in Boise and the oldest continuously operating synagogue west of the Mississippi) was lifted off its foundation and moved from a crowded street corner in downtown Boise to a more spacious location by a new Jewish center up on the Boise Bench. Here it is on 13th St. at about 2 AM when I showed up with my trusty Canon AE-1 and a tripod. |

![]() If you're heading home tonight, traffic on the Connector is backed up behind a synagogue, expect delays. |
![]() This is the only picture I took in the path of the building, I was careful not to make headlines by being struck by a moving synagogue. |
![]() The house of worship prepares to make a left turn. All along the path, workers lifted stoplights and raised telephone wires to clear the path. Not visible in this picture is a tree limb that the synagogue picked up a block previous. |
