Rhyolite
July 3, 2005

Outside of Beatty on the road to Death Valley is the ghost town of Rhyolite. Only a few buildings remain, but what caught my eye more was the collection of sculptures plopped out in the desert in front of Rhyolite by a group of Belgian artists.

Death claims a bicycle.

The miner is a common symbol of Nevada. The penguin, not so much.

A common desert hallucination in the '80s.

It should be no surprise that the most elaborate and well-maintainted building left in Rhyolite should be the former casino.

The rest of Rhyolite looks more like this.
